US Open Tennis Championship: Poland’s Swiatek Advances to Second Round

Doha: Poland’s Iga Swiatek, ranked second in the world, advanced to the second round of the US Open, the final of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, after defeating Colombia’s Emiliana Arango Tuesday in the first round of the competition, which she won in 2022.

According to Qatar News Agency, Swiatek, 24 years old, qualified by overcoming her opponent in straight sets (6-1) and (6-2), setting up a second-round match against Dutch player Suzan Lamens, who defeated American Valerie Glozman in straight sets (6-4) and (6-2).

Australian Maya Joint also advanced to the same round after defeating Victoria Jimenez from Andorra in straight sets (6-4) and (7-6), awaiting the winner of the match between ninth-seeded American Amanda Anisimova and Australian Kimberly Birrell.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk defeated Britain’s Katie Boulter in two sets to one (6-4, 6-4), setting up a match against Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez, who beat American Katie Volynets in straight sets.
