Santiago: Qatar Museums (QM), in collaboration with the Years of Culture initiative, has launched the art exhibition Your Ghosts Are Mine: Expanded Cinemas, Amplified Voices at Centro Cultural La Moneda in Santiago, marking its first presentation in Latin America. Hosted with the support of officials from both Qatar and Chile, this exhibition is a testament to the cultural ties strengthened through the Qatar Argentina and Chile 2025 Year of Culture.According to Qatar News Agency, the exhibition is produced by Qatar Museums and co-organized by Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art and the future Art Mill Museum, in association with Doha Film Institute (DFI). This cultural venture is a legacy project of the 2025 Year of Culture partnership with Chile and is supported by Chile's Ministry of Cultures, the Arts and Heritage. Curated by Matthieu Orléan of La Cinémathèque française, the exhibition showcases films and video installations by over 40 artists from the Arab world, Africa, and Southeast Asia, highlighting t he diverse voices supported by the Doha Film Institute.Matthieu Orléan, the curator, explained the exhibition's title, stating, "There are many ghosts or djinns in the old ruins of the deserts. They could be seen as a metaphor of your ancestors and your traditions. They could be compassionate sometimes, but if you listen too much to them and lose contact with your fellow humans, you could be led to madness and violence. The ghost has multiple faces." This title encapsulates the exhibition's exploration of cultural metaphors and human connections.Alejandra Valenzuela Oyanedel, Executive Director of Centro Cultural La Moneda, expressed her enthusiasm for the exhibition's arrival, noting that it reinforces the cultural institution's commitment to fostering intercultural dialogue. She emphasized, "We believe that art and culture have the power to build bridges, encourage reflection and enrich public conversation through what we share as societies."Zeina Arida, Director of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, highlighted the exhibition's role in bridging cultural divides and promoting a shared understanding of humanity. "We are honoured to present the exhibition in Chile and hope it inspires dialogue, curiosity and lasting cultural connections between our communities," she remarked.Catherine Grenier, Art Mill Museum Director of Concept, commented on the exhibition's innovative approach, saying, "Your Ghosts Are Mine: Expanded Cinemas, Amplified Voices is an ambitious attempt to reorganise the moving image's usual categories and to cross the lines of geopolitical borders."Fatma Hassan Alremaihi, Chief Executive Officer of Doha Film Institute, also spoke on the exhibition's impact, praising cinema's ability to connect diverse experiences and inspire empathy. She stressed the importance of authentic storytelling in fostering dialogue across cultures, noting the significance of bringing voices from the MENA region and Southeast Asia to audiences in Chile.The exhibition, which opened on August 5 in Centro Cultura l La Moneda's Sala Pacífico, offers an immersive exploration of themes such as community, memory, and transnational displacement through its structured environments like Deserts, Ruins, and Borders, providing visitors with a unique cinematic experience.
