OIC Welcomes Belgium’s Announcement to Recognize State of Palestine

Brussels: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) welcomed Belgium’s announcement of its intention to recognize the State of Palestine and impose sanctions on the Israeli occupation government.

According to Qatar News Agency, the OIC considered these significant steps as a reflection of Belgium’s firm commitment to the principles of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, particularly those affirming the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state based on the Jun. 4, 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

In a statement issued Wednesday by its General Secretariat, the OIC called on other countries to follow Belgium’s example in imposing sanctions on the Israeli occupation, in line with their obligations under the rulings of the International Court of Justice to achieve justice, ensure accountability, and put an end to the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people.

The OIC also renewed its call to all countries that have not yet recognized the State of Palestine to do so and to support Palestine’s bid for full membership in the United Nations, as part of international efforts aimed at achieving peace and implementing the two-state solution based on relevant international legitimacy resolutions.
