MOT Embarks on Comprehensive Hydrographic Survey of Qatar’s Waters

Doha: The Ministry of Transport has initiated a hydrographic surveying project aimed at updating the navigational nautical charts of Qatar and establishing a traffic separation scheme (TSS) to manage maritime traffic effectively. The scheme is designed to regulate vessel entry and exit, promoting safer and more efficient navigation in Qatari waters.

According to Qatar News Agency, the project adheres to the standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), and the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). It is structured into five phases, which will involve identifying anchorage areas, locating shipwrecks, and placing appropriate navigational markers. These efforts will result in updated nautical charts for Qatar and suggest vessel holding areas along with a dedicated navigational marking system.

Additionally, the project will incorporate a program for the regular examination of navigational signs, utilizing eco-friendly technologies such as batteries and solar panels. This program aims to enhance lighting and ensure that navigational markers are equipped with necessary dimensions to support safe navigation.

The initiative is crucial for bolstering and safeguarding the marine environment amid Qatar’s economic growth. It employs the latest eco-friendly surveillance and marking systems, aligning with the objectives of Qatar’s National Development Strategy (NDS3) and Qatar National Vision 2030 (QNV 2030).

Furthermore, the Ministry of Transport plans to train its staff involved with navigational aids services in accordance with the International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA) standards. This training is in line with the National Strategy for Logistic Services Sector’s action plans (2024-2030), which aim to reinforce Qatar’s status as a global logistics hub, support economic diversification, and provide traders and investors with reduced time and cost efficiencies.
