Bengkulu: An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck on Tuesday in western Indonesia. The tremor was detected 63 kilometers east of Enggano island, Bengkulu, at a depth of 30 kilometers.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Indonesia Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) reported the incident in a statement. Earthquakes are a common occurrence in Indonesia, which is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire. This region is known for its intense seismic and volcanic activity due to the convergence of multiple tectonic plates.

In a historical context, Indonesia experienced a devastating earthquake in 2004. The 9.1 magnitude quake in Aceh province triggered a massive tsunami, resulting in the loss of over 170,000 lives. Such events underscore the seismic vulnerability of the country.
