Labour Minister affirms Bahrain’s keenness to consolidate human rights, protect workers’ rights

Jameel bin Mohammed Ali Humaidan, Labour Minister, has affirmed that under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and thanks to the follow-up of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Bahrain is keen to consolidate the human rights system and protect workers’ rights.

This has been achieved by creating a secure and sustainable work environment that reflects the kingdom’s civilisational image and leadership in putting in place secure procedures to protect the workforce at various production sectors, which contributed to ensuring sustainable growth, preserving workers’ dignity and constantly improving work conditions, according to International Labour Organisation’s standards, he said.

The minister made the statements marking the end of the summer afternoon work ban which ran between July 1 and August 31.

He announced that the rate of compliance with the summer afternoon outdoor work ban had reached 99.92% this year, which reflects commitment to Edict 3/2013, given its humanitarian and economic dimensions, and ultimate goal of protecting workers from the dangers of working during difficult summer weather conditions.

He said that the Labour Ministry’s specialised teams had carried out 21,723 inspection visits to work sites during the ban, and reported no more than 16 violations by employers and 31 violations by workers.

He asserted that the high compliance rate had contributed to ensuring workers’ safety and increasing the level of productivity.

Edict 3/2013 prohibits outdoor work between noon to 4 pm from July 1 to August 31.

Under the edict, a jail term not exceeding three months, and/or a BD500-1000 fine, is the penalty inflicted on violators.
