5.3-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes South Sandwich Islands

Doha: A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck the South Sandwich Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean. The earthquake's occurrence highlights the region's geological activity.

According to Qatar News Agency, the US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10.0 kilometers. This region is known for frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position at the intersection of the South American and Antarctic tectonic plates.

The South Sandwich Islands previously experienced a 5.1-magnitude earthquake on June 30, which caused minimal damage due to the remoteness of the location. This recent seismic event further underscores the area's susceptibility to natural occurrences.
