Damascus: The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed the US House of Representatives’ vote to repeal the Caesar Act within the National Defense Authorization Act, considering it a result of constructive diplomatic efforts undertaken by the Syrian government with the US over the past months.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Ministry affirmed that the move represents a pivotal step towards opening a new path for cooperation, paving the way for broader economic recovery and the return of opportunities that Syrians have been deprived of due to the sanctions.
The Ministry noted that the coming period may witness an improvement in import activity and the availability of essential goods, expressing its hope that the anticipated vote in the Senate will complete the repeal of the executive system and open new horizons for cooperation between the two countries.
On Wednesday evening, the US House of Representatives passed the final version of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2026, including a provision that completely and unconditionally repeals the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act of 2019.
The vote was overwhelmingly 312 to 112, a move described as the most crucial in the bill’s passage and paving the way for a new phase of economic recovery in Syria after years of restrictions and isolation.
The bill is scheduled to move to the Senate for a vote next week, and upon its approval, it will be sent to President Donald Trump for his signature. The repeal will take effect immediately upon official ratification.
