Doha:The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) in Qatar is observing Global Ergonomics Month this October, emphasizing the creation of safer workplaces and the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders to enhance employee wellbeing and performance.
According to Qatar News Agency, the international campaign encourages workers, especially those in demanding environments like healthcare, to integrate ergonomic principles into their daily activities. The initiative focuses on manual handling and patient transfers to mitigate the risk of work-related musculoskeletal injuries among PHCC staff.
Practical sessions are being conducted at three health centers, providing employees with hands-on experience in safer manual handling and patient transfer techniques. Additionally, PHCC is developing an online training module and an e-learning lecture as part of its continuing professional development program.
Dr. Maryam Al Muslemani, director of occupational health and safety at PHCC, emphasized that a safe and supportive workplace benefits both employees and the quality of healthcare delivered to patients. She highlighted that work environments designed around employees' physical needs can decrease pain and fatigue while boosting concentration, job satisfaction, and productivity.
The campaign further advocates for practical measures such as safe handling techniques, regular stretching, movement during work hours, and appropriate workplace organization. Dr. Sameera Al Hajri, director of occupational health, noted that musculoskeletal disorders are common work-related health issues and that simple changes in work methods and design can significantly improve conditions and reduce injury risks.
Additionally, the campaign stresses the cognitive aspects of ergonomics, including mental workload management, clear information dissemination, and task organization, alongside ensuring physical safety. Officials stated that training and awareness are crucial for preventing workplace injuries and aiding employees in recognizing risks, adapting their work environments, and adopting safer practices.
