UNIFIL Soldier Injured in Landmine Explosion Southern Lebanon

Doha: The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced Wednesday that a peacekeeper was injured when a landmine exploded while carrying out an operational activity in the village of Zebqin, southern Lebanon. The injured soldier was transferred to a UNIFIL facility near the site of the incident, where he received initial treatment. He was later transferred to Beirut.

According to Qatar News Agency, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said during a press conference in New York that the soldier’s condition was stable, noting that the incident highlights the dangers of unexploded ordnance in southern Lebanon.

In a related context, UNIFIL also observed seven activities by the Israeli occupation forces north of the Blue Line, in violation of Security Council Resolution 1701. UNIFIL reiterated its call for the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territories so that the Lebanese Army can deploy throughout southern Lebanon with UNIFIL support.
