Damascus: United Nations Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, emphasized strong international support for a “new Syria,” underlining the need for an inclusive political transition that leads to a new constitution and free, fair elections within a Syrian-led process.
According to Qatar News Agency, Pedersen, at a press conference in Damascus, discussed his meeting with Head of the new Syrian administration, Ahmed al-Sharaa. They addressed seven critical challenges: uniting armed factions into one national army, the situation in northeastern Syria, protecting all Syrians, the political transition, transitional justice, sanctions, economic recovery and reconstruction, and Israeli incursions.
The UN envoy expressed his satisfaction with the positive feedback received during his visit, stating that they understood the priorities and ideas surrounding the political transition and areas of cooperation with the UN, and certainly with al-Sharaa’s call for international support in these vital areas.
Pedersen assured that the UN would continue to support Syrian people, stressing the importance of advancing toward an inclusive and transparent political process and forming a unified Syrian national army, which is essential for stability.
He also reiterated the importance of national dialogue, noting that how it is carried out is up to Syrians themselves, with ideas still evolving.
Pedersen arrived in Syria on Monday for his second visit since the political transition on December 8, 2024. During his visit to Damascus, Pedersen discussed the UN’s readiness and plans to support the transitional process and Syrian people in line with the principles of Security Council Resolution 2254.
