Oleshky:Kyiv Ukraine and Russia have successfully conducted a joint humanitarian operation to evacuate residents from the Russian-controlled city of Oleshky in southern Ukraine. This marks the first collaborative effort of its kind since the onset of the war in February 2022.
According to Qatar News Agency, the operation was facilitated under a US-mediated local ceasefire, which also enabled the delivery of humanitarian aid to the city situated in the Kherson region. Ukrainian negotiator David Arakhamia mentioned that some evacuees traveled through Russia and Belarus before reaching Ukrainian-controlled areas.
Russian human rights commissioner Yana Lantratova reported that the convoy arrived in Armyansk, Crimea, where it was divided into two groups. Both Ukrainian and Russian officials confirmed that the evacuation proceeded without any incidents, and the temporary ceasefire remained intact throughout the operation.
The exact number of evacuees was not disclosed. Oleshky, which had a pre-war population of around 24,000, now has approximately 1,000 residents. The humanitarian truce, agreed upon on October 23, comes amidst Washington's increased efforts to revive negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, aiming to advance towards resolving the ongoing conflict.
