TUNIS: Tunisian authorities announced Monday the recovery of two bodies and the rescue of 17 illegal migrants from drowning, after their boat broke down and took on water in the open Mediterranean Sea off the coast of the country.
According to Qatar News Agency, the authorities reported that units of the Coast Guard in the northern region, in cooperation with the Navy, successfully managed to recover the bodies and rescue the migrants who were on board the troubled vessel. The operation highlights ongoing challenges in managing migrant flows across the Mediterranean Sea.
Tunisia has long been a transit point for thousands of migrants and asylum seekers aiming to reach Europe. The majority of these individuals originate from African countries located south of the Sahara Desert. They frequently embark on perilous journeys from Tunisian shores with hopes of reaching European coasts. The incident underscores the risks involved in such endeavors and the continuous efforts by Tunisian authorities to address the situation.
