Shura Council Participates in IPU Assembly in Tanzania

Arusha:The Shura Council concluded its participation in the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the 218th Governing Council, and related meetings in the United Republic of Tanzania. The event gathered parliamentary speakers and delegations globally.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Shura Council delegation was led by HE Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti, Deputy Speaker of the Council and Vice-President of the IPU Executive Committee, representing the Arab Group in the Committee.

The delegation took part in discussions centered around the theme "Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all." The meetings addressed various parliamentary and international issues, with a focus on inclusive social development and the promotion of rights for persons with disabilities.

In addition, HE Eng. Ahmed bin Hitmi Al Hitmi represented the Shura Council at a conference of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network.

At the session's conclusion, HE Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives Milton Dick was elected as IPU President for the 2026-2029 term, succeeding HE Dr. Tulia Ackson.

The Assembly wrapped up with the adoption of the "Arusha Declaration," emphasizing the need for strengthened good governance, transparency, accountability, and broader community participation in decision-making. It also advocated for the empowerment of women, youth, and persons with disabilities, responsible use of modern technologies and AI, and enhanced parliamentary cooperation to tackle shared challenges. The Governing Council meetings preceding the closing session discussed the role of parliaments in promoting sustainable development and addressing common issues.
