QGOSM Highlights the Crucial Role of Measurement at World Metrology Day Celebration

Doha: Qatar General Organization for Standards and Metrology (QGOSM) joined its global counterparts in celebrating World Metrology Day, which is observed annually on May 20. This year’s theme, ‘Measurements for all times, for all people,’ underscores the importance of measurement in achieving social and economic justice and transparency, as well as sustainable development goals.

According to Qatar News Agency, HE Chairperson of QGOSM Eng. Mohammed bin Saud Mohammed Al Musallam emphasized that the theme reflects a fundamental message about the impact of accurate measurements beyond laboratories and factories. Measurement plays a vital role in daily life by ensuring the quality of food and water, the safety of medicines, energy efficiency, and the reliability of commercial transactions.

In a joint speech, Director of the International Bureau of Legal Metrology (BIML) Anthony Donnellan and Director of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) Dr. Martin Milton highlighted the significance of this year’s celebration, as it marks the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention and the founding of the BIPM. They reviewed the achievements made over the past century and a half and discussed future opportunities and challenges for global measurement systems, stressing the essential role of measurement in all aspects of human life.

The two directors noted that by the 20th century, the Bureau had expanded its mission to include developing specifications for measuring temperature, light, and electricity. They pointed out the new vision that emerged at the beginning of the 21st century, focusing on making the International System of Units (SI) based on the fundamental constants of nature, which has paved the way for quantitative measurement.

Donnellan and Dr. Milton also highlighted the increased need for internationally agreed-upon specifications, driven by precise measurement specifications and advancements in science and industry. They mentioned the establishment of the International Organization for Legal Metrology (OIML) in 1955, which aims to incorporate measurement specifications into national laws and regulations, ensuring the unified use of measuring instruments.
