Qatari Prime Minister’s Visit to Syria Marks Renewed Bilateral Ties

Doha: Qatari newspapers on Friday highlighted the visit by HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani to Damascus on Thursday and his meeting with HE leader of the new administration in Syria, Ahmed Al Sharaa. The newspapers emphasized that the visit reflects Qatar’s steadfast positions in supporting the Syrian people and represents a significant step toward strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

According to Qatar News Agency, the papers also noted the anticipated visit of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani to the sisterly Syrian Arab Republic in response to the invitation extended by the leader of the new administration in Syria. This visit underscores His Highness’s interest in enhancing bilateral relations with the new Syria and his unwavering support for the brotherly Syrian people and their aspirations.

In its editorial titled “Syria’s Stability is a Supreme Qatari Interest,” Al Raya newspaper stated that HH the Amir’s upcoming visit to Damascus will be the first visit of an Arab leader to the city, sending a strong message of support from Qatar to the Syrian people and the new administration. The newspaper added that Qatar has provided full support to the Syrian people throughout their 14-year struggle against tyranny, reaffirming its continued commitment to standing by the Syrian people during this sensitive phase. It affirmed that Qatar believes the Syrian people’s struggle will ultimately lead to the building of an advanced and prosperous state where Syrian citizens enjoy their full rights and human dignity.

Al Raya concluded by stating that Qatar takes pride in resuming relations with Damascus after a 13-year hiatus and extends its hand to the Syrian brothers to achieve a future partnership that benefits both peoples. It stressed that the return of security and stability to Syria is a supreme Qatari interest, given Syria’s significant weight in Arab decision-making. The newspaper called on the international community to extend a helping hand to Syria and to engage with it on an equal footing without imposing any dictates.

In its editorial titled “Principled Positions,” Al Watan newspaper stated that Qatar’s principled and steadfast positions were embodied in the visit by HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs to Damascus and his meeting with Ahmed Al Sharaa. From there, he announced the provision of necessary technical support to rebuild Syria’s infrastructure and efforts to lift sanctions on Syria as soon as possible. The newspaper considered these steps a confirmation of Qatar’s unwavering and ongoing commitment to its Syrian brothers, reflecting its active role as a supporter of peace and stability in the region and the world, with the aim of restoring calm to the region as a whole.
