In its editorial, Al-Watan newspaper said that for more than ten months, the war in the Gaza Strip has raged on. What happened on Oct. 7 and the subsequent escalation appears to have been merely a prelude to a broader war, as Israel, which claims to have felt an existential threat after those attacks, is now seeking to restore its prestige by any means possible, even if that means expanding the scope of the conflict.
The continued aggression against the Gaza Strip with unprecedented brutality has caused a massive health disaster in the area. This is due to the lack and unavailability of basic hygiene necessities, the disruption of sanitation services, the accumulation of waste in the streets and around the shelters for displaced people, and the lack of clean drinking water. These conditions have created a favorable environment for the spread of diseases and the transmission of various epidemics, including vaccine-derived poliovirus and hepatitis A, the news paper added.
Al-Watan concluded its editorial by s
aying that the Israeli occupation forces continue to commit the crime of genocide in the Gaza Strip, amid a catastrophic humanitarian situation as a result of the siege, and the continuation of displacement operations from the central regions.
For it part, The Peninsula newspaper said in its editorial that the diplomatic efforts led by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States to secure a ceasefire in Gaza have garnered significant international backing, as mediation is widely recognized as the only viable path to ending the ongoing conflict, saving innocent lives, and addressing the deepening humanitarian crisis in the region.
Under the titled “Cautious Optimism for Gaza Truce” the newspaper said, although the recent ceasefire talks in Doha concluded without a formal agreement, there remains strong global optimism that a truce can be achieved after more than ten months of relentless warfare.
This optimism stems from discussions held on Thursday and Friday, where mediators worked diligently to broker a ceasefire
and secure the release of hostages and detainees, it noted.
The United States, with the support of Qatar and Egypt, has presented a proposal to both sides aimed at narrowing the remaining gaps, consistent with the principles outlined by President Biden on May 31, 2024, and Security Council Resolution 2735. This proposal builds on recent points of agreement and provides a framework for the swift implementation of a ceasefire, The paper added.
At the end of its editorial, The Peninsula called on the international community to step up to reduce the escalation and address the root causes of the conflict, including the establishment of a Palestinian state and the implementation of a two-state solution. There is a clear path forward to achieving a ceasefire, saving lives, providing much-needed relief to the people of Gaza, and calming regional tensions.
