Qatar Calls for Compliance with Disarmament Obligations and Cessation of Nuclear Tests

New York:The State of Qatar has emphasized the necessity of adhering to disarmament conventions and agreements, alongside supporting global initiatives to cease nuclear tests and halt the advancement of nuclear arsenals and other deadly weapons. This is aimed at fostering global peace and security and safeguarding future generations and ecosystems from the threats posed by weapon proliferation.

According to Qatar News Agency, the statement was delivered by Talal Abdulaziz Al Naama, First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, during the general debate of the United Nations General Assembly's First Committee at its 81st session in New York. Qatar expressed disappointment over the lack of consensus at the eleventh Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which concluded without a substantive outcome document.

Al Naama highlighted Qatar's support for the United Nations Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction, which was convened under General Assembly decision 73/546. Qatar backs Oman’s chairmanship of the seventh session of this Conference, set to end in November 2026, and anticipates regional cooperation to ensure its success. Qatar is also preparing to assume the presidency of the conference's eighth session.

In reaffirming Qatar’s commitment to peaceful atomic energy use under the NPT, Al Naama pointed to the adoption of a draft decision by the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons during its 112th session in The Hague. This decision, reinstating the rights of the Syrian Arab Republic within the Organization, was facilitated by Qatar’s diplomatic efforts.

Qatar has condemned Iran's missile and drone attacks since February 2026, viewing them as violations of international law and the UN Charter. Al Naama stressed the importance of complying with Security Council resolution 2817 (2026), particularly regarding maritime rights, and reiterated Qatar's commitment to diplomatic efforts for regional peace and stability.

Additionally, Qatar condemned the Houthi attack on Saudi Arabia's Abha and King Khalid International Airports, which resulted in casualties and damage. Al Naama emphasized Qatar's view of this as a severe violation of Saudi sovereignty and a threat to regional security, affirming Qatar's solidarity with Saudi Arabia.
