Davos: HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani stated that the new Syrian administration is taking correct steps and needs help to achieve stability, safeguard the state institutions, and secure the essential needs for the people of Syria. This statement was made during a dialogue moderated by HE President of the World Economic Forum, Borge Brende, at the 55th session of the World Economic Forum 2025 held in Davos, Switzerland.
According to Qatar News Agency, HE the Prime Minister expressed optimism about the future of the Middle East, despite challenges faced in 2024. He highlighted positive developments in early 2025, including the election of a new Lebanese President and the downfall of a brutal Syrian regime. The State of Qatar maintains a principled stance against reintegrating war criminals, emphasizing the importance of not setting a precedent for impunity.
HE the Prime Minister underscored the international community’s consensus on the necessity of Syria’s stability, warning of severe consequences if failure occurs again. He praised his meeting with Syria’s new administration leader, noting their openness and willingness to engage all factions to form a representative government.
HE Al-Thani also discussed the importance of a comprehensive roadmap for Syria’s stability, highlighting the potential of the Syrian people, as evidenced by their contributions as refugees. He expressed hope for US President Donald Trump’s success in achieving a two-state solution and praised the US Administration’s role in the Gaza ceasefire deal, acknowledging the efforts of the US President’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff.
The Prime Minister noted the robust leadership of the US Administration in recent days, urging conflicting parties to prioritize long-term stability over short-term political goals. He expressed hope for the recent agreement involving the United States and Egypt to lead to regional conflict resolution and aid delivery to Gaza.
On the sustainability of the agreement, HE Al-Thani emphasized the importance of conflict parties’ commitment to implementation, with guarantors and mediators working to monitor and address potential violations. He outlined the continuity of the framework agreed upon in December 2023 and expressed optimism for smoother negotiations in future phases.
Addressing Gaza’s reconstruction, HE the Prime Minister highlighted the devastation and stressed the need for lasting peace to ensure investments in rebuilding are worthwhile. He called for Palestinian reconciliation and governance for effective decision-making in Gaza.
Regarding West Bank instability, HE Al-Thani condemned settler provocations and stressed the importance of protection for Palestinians. He warned that any government in the region would struggle under Israeli constraints, advocating for a just peace.
HE the Prime Minister also responded to concerns about a potential Israeli-Iranian conflict, emphasizing the need to defuse tensions to prevent all-out war. He reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to diplomacy and mediation in achieving regional peace and rejected a nuclear arms race, advocating for a nuclear-free region.
In closing, HE Al-Thani highlighted Qatar and the GCC’s partnership with the US Administration in seeking a peaceful resolution to the Iranian nuclear program, noting President Trump’s strategic focus on conflict suppression.
