Geneva:HE Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi participated in the opening session of the Geneva Peace Forum on Monday.
According to Qatar News Agency, HE Al Khulaifi highlighted the crucial role of rules and standards in mediation for peace, particularly from Qatar's experience. He emphasized that mediation depends on trust, impartiality, confidentiality, and a commitment to peaceful settlement, beyond merely bringing parties together.
He pointed out that these principles are practical conditions that allow risk-taking for peace, testing compromise solutions, and keeping parties engaged in negotiations, even when agreements seem out of reach. He stressed the need to protect the principles of mediation and the space for multilateral peacebuilding efforts.
HE Al Khulaifi remarked that wars today rarely end decisively, making mediation vital to keeping the path to agreement open. He called for protecting the space for mediation and ensuring a secure environment for dialogue.
He also noted that Qatar's commitment to mediation has been strengthened by pressures, emphasizing the country's responsibility to uphold mediation standards. The Minister urged the United Nations to remain focused on defending mediation as outlined in the UN Charter, and called for stronger legal protections for mediators, stressing their importance in achieving peace.
