Doha: Local press editorials have recently put a spotlight on Qatar’s domestic reforms and its role in regional diplomacy. Similarly, Al Watan newspaper emphasized Qatar’s “skilful diplomacy,” highlighting the discussions held by HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani with regional and international counterparts. These discussions included meetings with HE Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran Abbas Araghchi, HE High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the EU, Kaja Kallas, and HE the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Cyprus, Konstantinos Kombos, whose country currently holds the EU Council presidency. The paper reported that Qatar has reaffirmed its support for initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and achieving peaceful solutions.
According to Qatar News Agency, the English-language daily The Peninsula cautioned about the risks facing the fragile ceasefire in Gaza amid ongoing Israeli violations. In an editorial titled “The fragile Gaza truce needs accountability,” the paper highlighted that the absence of accountability threatens the ceasefire’s durability and exacerbates civilian suffering. The newspaper detailed that over 71,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 171,000 injured since October 2023, illustrating the immense human cost of the conflict. It also noted that casualties have persisted even after the ceasefire, alongside worsening humanitarian conditions due to winter weather and infrastructure destruction.
Despite these challenges, The Peninsula expressed cautious optimism regarding the second phase of the ceasefire agreement, which is supported by diplomatic efforts from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkiye. This phase involves plans for establishing a transitional Palestinian technocratic administration in Gaza and initiating a comprehensive reconstruction process. The editorial concluded by stating that the success of these efforts will depend on the full commitment of all parties, genuine accountability, and sustained international engagement.
