Kremlin Open to Halting Strikes on Ukraine for Election Day

Moscow:Russian President Vladimir Putin is willing to pause military strikes on Ukraine specifically for the day of a Ukrainian presidential election if Kyiv is genuinely prepared to conduct one, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. This offer, however, excludes the broader ceasefire previously proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

According to Qatar News Agency, Peskov emphasized that Putin, who holds the position of Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces, might issue such an order solely for election day. The Kremlin has turned down Zelenskyy's suggestion of a 60-day ceasefire to facilitate Ukrainian presidential elections, stating that Moscow's focus is on securing a lasting peace agreement rather than a temporary cessation of hostilities.

Peskov also mentioned that Russia was ready to resume peace negotiations immediately following Russia's State Duma elections. He accused Ukraine of conducting large-scale attacks on Moscow, aiming to disrupt the electoral process and targeting polling stations.

He further highlighted the necessity for Russia to undertake effective measures and make responsible decisions to secure a long-term peaceful resolution, while acknowledging the mediation efforts by the United States. Reaffirming Moscow's stance on the proposed 60-day truce, Peskov stated that Russia is not seeking a temporary ceasefire but is committed to achieving a comprehensive peace agreement.
