Israel Mulls Establishing Thousands of Settlement Units in Occupied Jerusalem

Jerusalem: The Israeli occupation government is discussing three plans to establish thousands of new settlement units in the occupied East Jerusalem.

According to Qatar News Agency, Palestine’s News Agency (WAFA) quoted Hebrew media channels as saying that the largest plan includes the construction of nearly 9,000 settlement units at Jerusalem International Airport in Qalandia, near the village of Kafr Aqab. This comes after the occupation authorities endorsed plans to construct a settlement on the land of Jerusalem International Airport, which was established in 1920 and has been permanently shuttered by Israel since the uprising of 2000.

Media circles revealed that what is dubbed the Israeli planning and construction committee mulled a series of construction plans in East Jerusalem. They have approved a plan to construct a religious school for extremist settlers in the central area of Sheikh Jarrah in occupied Jerusalem.

The media circles added that discussions are underway to expand the Givat Shaked settlement adjacent to Sharafat village in the southern part of East Jerusalem. The plan includes building 700 settlement units, a move that poses a threat to separating the holy city from the southern West Bank.

The United Nations considers settlement activities in the occupied territories as unlawful and has been calling for a halt to such activities. It warns that these activities could jeopardize the chances of resolving the conflict based on the two-state solution principle.
