Tehran: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reaffirmed Thursday his country’s commitment to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which Iran signed in the 1970s, as well as to the safeguards agreement. This affirmation comes despite Iran’s announcement to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) following Israeli and American strikes on its nuclear facilities.
According to Qatar News Agency, Araghchi stated on his account on the platform (X), “Iran remains committed to the NPT and its Safeguards Agreement, our cooperation with IAEA will be channeled through Iran’s Supreme National Security Council for obvious safety and security reasons.” He also criticized Germany’s stance, labeling Tehran’s suspension of cooperation with the UN agency as a catastrophic signal.
Furthermore, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian ratified a law suspending his country’s cooperation with the IAEA. The Guardian Council had previously approved the bill one day after it was unanimously passed by the Iranian Parliament with 221 votes.
