Doha: The GCC has endorsed Oman's decision, coordinated with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), to establish a temporary maritime corridor through the Strait of Hormuz to aid in the evacuation of over 11,000 stranded seafarers and maintain free navigation.
According to Qatar News Agency, GCC Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi noted that the initiative exemplifies Oman's approach to fostering regional security and stability. This effort aims to enhance the safety of maritime navigation, uphold international law, and ensure the continuous movement of regional and global trade.
The GCC also criticized Iranian assertions and threats to navigation freedom in the Strait of Hormuz following the initiative's announcement. The bloc emphasized that the temporary corridor is designed to facilitate the evacuation of stranded seafarers, strengthen regional and global supply chains, and reflect Gulf states' commitment to supporting regional and international efforts for maritime security, promoting stability, and reducing regional tensions.
