Doha: Fire Station: Artist in Residence will hold an Open Studio event tomorrow, Wednesday, featuring a session titled “Minimalism: A Way of Thinking Beyond Aesthetics” and a panel discussion with Moroccan artist Safaa Erruas.
According to Qatar News Agency, the event aligns with the Years of Culture initiative, launched in 2012 to promote cultural exchange and shared experiences across the globe. It is also part of the Qatar-Morocco 2024 Year of Culture program.
The session will explore minimalism, a movement that emerged in the 1960s as a response to abstract art, characterized by simplicity, minimal use of elements, and a focus on removing excess detail. However, Erruas will present minimalism not just as an aesthetic style but as a lens to engage with broader social and philosophical ideas, offering a deep perspective on its relevance in contemporary discourse.
Director of Fire Station: Artist in Residence, Khalifa Al Obaidly, stated that the event creates valuable opportunities for dialogue and reshaping perceptions of how art reflects or reimagines the world. He noted that the Open Studio and panel discussion will enhance Fire Station’s programs, allowing audiences to connect with critical ideas through Erruas’s distinctive artistic approach. He also underscored the importance of fostering collaborations between prominent international artists and the local art community.
Safaa Erruas, a Tetouan-born artist, graduated from the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tetouan. A multidisciplinary artist, her work delves into the contrasts between sensation, perception, and experimentation.
