Riyadh: An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck off the east coast of Aomori Prefecture, Japan, in the Pacific Ocean Sunday.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 50 km. No tsunami warning was issued, and there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Japan lies at the intersection of four tectonic plates, making it particularly prone to seismic activity. It is also home to more than 100 active volcanoes.
