World Social Summit in Qatar Highlights Essential Role of Civil Society in Social Development

Doha: HE Minister of Social Development and Family Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi emphasized Qatar’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with civil society organizations, asserting that comprehensive and sustainable social development is not attainable without their active involvement. She highlighted these points during her opening speech at the Civil Society Forum, part of the second World Summit for Social Development in Doha.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Civil Society Forum is orchestrated by the NGO Committee on Social Development in collaboration with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA). Her Excellency underscored Qatar’s pioneering approach, especially demonstrated during the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) in 2023, where civil society was engaged as a vital partner in dialogue and decision-making processes.

HE Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi elaborated on Qatar’s efforts to expand volunteering opportunities and community initiatives, which bolster the contributions of individuals, institutions, and civil society in realizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She mentioned that the national strategy for social development 2025 ‘2030, themed “From Care to Empowerment,” was developed through extensive consultations with experts, families, and civil society institutions, ensuring its priorities are well-defined and its outcomes sustainable.

Furthermore, Her Excellency affirmed Qatar’s support for programs aligned with the SDGs, aiming to enhance civic participation, particularly among women and youth. These efforts include enabling their involvement in designing and monitoring social, educational, and health services, as well as in constructing more inclusive and equitable social protection systems.

In her concluding remarks, HE Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi highlighted the significance of the Doha Political Declaration, the Summit’s main outcome, as it reflects a renewed global commitment to establishing fair, inclusive, and sustainable economic, social, and cultural foundations, promoting justice, equality, and human dignity, and advancing sustainable social development.
