UNRWA Says 1000 Pound of Unexploded Bombs Found in Khan Younis Schools After Israeli Withdrawal

Vienna, The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) announced Tuesday that it had found a 1,000-pound (460 Kg) of unexploded bombs inside schools following the Israeli occupation forces’ withdrawal from the city Khan Younis, in southern Gaza.

UNRWA said that UN agencies conducted an assessment mission in the city after the Israeli pull-out last week, with the mission concluding, “There are significant challenges in operating safely due to the presence of unexploded ordnance (UXOs), including 1,000-pound bombs inside schools and on roads. Thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) require a range of lifesaving assistance, including health, water and sanitation and food.” Earlier this month, the United Nations said that clearing the Gaza Strip of UXOs will require millions of dollars and will take many years, estimating the initial cost at about USD 45 million.
