UNIFIL: Peacekeeper Killed in Southern Lebanon

Unifil: The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced the death of one peacekeeper and the serious injury of another following a projectile explosion at one of its positions near Adshit al-Qusayr in southern Lebanon.

According to Qatar News Agency, UNIFIL stated that the origin of the projectile is unknown, and an investigation has been launched to determine all of the circumstances surrounding the incident. The statement highlighted the importance of understanding the situation fully to ensure the safety of their personnel.

UNIFIL reiterated its call on all parties to uphold their obligations under international law, emphasizing the need for the safety and security of UN personnel and property at all times. They urged parties to refrain from any actions that could endanger peacekeepers, highlighting the critical importance of their work in maintaining peace and security in the region.

UNIFIL emphasized that deliberate attacks on peacekeepers constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Such acts may be considered war crimes, further stressing the seriousness of the situation and the need for accountability.
