UNIFIL: The UNIFIL head said the UN peacekeeping mission would remain committed to de-escalating tensions in southern Lebanon and promoting dialogue towards a permanent ceasefire along the border.
According to Qatar News Agency, Lieutenant General Aroldo Lazaro said during a ceremony marking UNIFIL’s 47th anniversary that 339 peacekeepers from the mission gave their lives for the cause of peace in southern Lebanon since 1978.
“We have forged strong ties with local communities and worked closely with the Lebanese Armed Forces, helping them enhance security and stability,” Lazaro said as cited by UNIFIL website. The ceremony was attended by Lebanese politicians and senior Army officers.
“We are entering a new chapter, working alongside the Lebanese armed forces to clear roads, make repairs, and remove explosives,” he said. “UNIFIL’s ability to support LAF [Lebanese Army Forces] effectively will depend on the backing of the Lebanese government and local authorities, whose cooperation is essential to ensure the mission can operate safely and efficiently in carrying out its mandate.”
