Doha:The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has reported a significant increase in acute malnutrition cases among children in Yemen, with severe cases worsening due to limited access to healthcare and treatment centers.
According to Qatar News Agency, UNICEF's Representative in Yemen, Akhil Iyer, stated that mobile nutrition teams have screened nearly 2,900 children in accessible areas, revealing that over a quarter of these children are suffering from acute malnutrition. Among them, 200 children were identified as having the most severe form of malnutrition.
UNICEF further noted that around 71,000 children have been displaced over the past three weeks, which has contributed to the rising number of malnutrition cases at displacement sites.
The organization emphasized that the current data only provides a partial view of the situation. They project that 2.2 million children under the age of five in Yemen will experience acute malnutrition this year, with over half a million of these cases classified as severe acute malnutrition.
