The UN has expressed grave concern about the repercussions of the fighting in Sudan on the humanitarian situation with civilians facing severe shortages of food, water, medicine and fuel, as well as limited communication and electricity services.
Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary General Farhan Haq said that the prices of basic commodities and means of transportation saw a dramatic increase amid reports of looting of humanitarian supplies and relief stores.
He conveyed the calls of the UN and its partners to the parties to respect humanitarian workers, pointing out that the fighting led to the displacement of civilians in the capital, Khartoum, Northern State, Blue Nile, North Kordofan, North Darfur, West Darfur and South Darfur.
The UN was forced to reduce its presence in a number of areas where fighting is intense, and to establish a center in Port Sudan, where a core UN team leads humanitarian operations.
