UAE Confirms Containment of Oil Spill from GEM NO. 2 Tanker

Umm Al Qaiwain:UAE The United Arab Emirates (UAE) confirmed on Friday that an oil spill from the tanker GEM NO. 2 has been contained. The incident occurred in UAE territorial waters, and measures have been implemented to mitigate associated risks and ensure maritime navigation safety.

According to Qatar News Agency, the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure stated that specialized technical teams are working diligently to address the technical issues of the GEM NO. 2 tanker. This includes repairing damaged sections, restoring some operational systems, and assessing the integrity of its structure to determine safe handling options.

No new oil leakage has been detected from the tanker, based on the latest field assessments. The UAE authorities continue maritime and aerial monitoring operations, supported by satellite imagery, to closely track the situation and identify any potential developments.

The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment is also addressing the marine pollution caused by the oil spill. This effort is in ongoing coordination with relevant federal and local authorities. Surveying, monitoring, and field-cleaning operations are being conducted in the coastal areas affected by the pollution, with public safety as a top priority.

The ministry noted that satellite images show the oil slick is concentrated off the coast of Umm Al Qaiwain and extends partially towards coastal areas in Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, and Sharjah. The concentration of pollution has significantly declined, while efforts continue to contain and remediate the effects of the spill, which has been stopped at its source.
