The Tunisian authorities announced Friday rescuing more than 14,000 illegal immigrants during the first quarter of 2023.
In a statement on Friday, the Tunisian National Guard said that from January 01 to March 31, 2023, its units thwarted 501 operations to cross the maritime borders and rescued 14,406 illegal immigrants, including 13,138 from sub-Saharan African countries.
To stop the stowaway sailing, the units of the maritime regions arrested 63 people after their involvement in mediating and organizing irregular migration operations and seizing 135 marine vehicles and 12 cars used for transportation.
Tunisia is a transit point for thousands of immigrants from sub-Saharan countries, heading to the European coasts, particularly Italy.
