Washington: US President Donald Trump announced that the United States has reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland, granting Washington what he described as permanent control over security and other needs on the strategically important Arctic Island.

According to Qatar News Agency, Trump shared the news on his Truth Social platform, stating that the agreement ensures the United States will "FOREVER" have the ability to secure and defend both Greenland and the US. This includes preventing any US adversary from establishing a military base or significant presence in Greenland without Washington's express written consent. Trump emphasized that this arrangement would incur no cost to the United States.

The US President also revealed plans to immediately begin developing a significant military presence on the island. The agreement is set to be signed on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly next week, pending parliamentary procedures. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen confirmed that the agreement respects Denmark's sovereignty and acknowledges the Greenlandic people's right to self-determination.

Trump's pursuit of increased US control over Greenland has been a consistent focus since he began his second term in January 2025, driven by the island's strategic location in the Arctic. His previous attempts to acquire Greenland had previously strained US-Denmark relations, despite both being NATO members.

This new agreement comes on the heels of Trump's announcement of a "framework" agreement with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, aimed at enhancing US influence in the Arctic. It also follows the establishment of a joint working group comprising the United States, Denmark, and Greenland to address Washington's security concerns in the region.
