Syrian President Al Sharaa’s Visit to Doha Highlights Key Phase in Bilateral Relations

Doha: Charge d’Affaires at the Embassy of the Syrian Arab Republic to the State of Qatar, Dr. Bilal Turkiya, emphasized that HE President Ahmed Al Sharaa’s visit to Doha marks a pivotal moment in the strong bilateral relations between the two countries. The visit reflects the depth of mutual respect and appreciation between their leaderships and underscores their commitment to developing and enhancing cooperation in various fields to ensure Syria’s revival and support during a critical phase in its history.

According to Qatar News Agency, Dr. Turkiya stated that this visit carries great symbolism as it is HE the President’s first visit to Doha following the fall of the previous regime. It holds profound implications beyond the political and diplomatic framework, embodying the special place of the government and people of Qatar and HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani in the hearts of Syrians.

He added that the leaders of both countries are meeting at this historic moment to reaffirm joint action and strategic integration, serving the interests of both peoples while enhancing Syria’s security, stability, and revival, matters of great importance to Qatar.

Dr. Turkiya noted that the fraternal meeting between the two leaders will address several key issues, primarily strengthening relations between the two nations, supporting development efforts, and coordinating on regional matters of mutual interest.

The Syrian Charge d’Affaires also praised the evolving relations between Qatar and Syria, stating that relations between the two countries are progressing rapidly. This development is reinforced by reciprocal visits, culminating in HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani’s official visit to Damascus on Jan. 30, 2025 – the first visit by a head of state to Syria. This was preceded by multiple visits at the foreign ministerial level, reaffirming the depth of ties between the two nations and their alignment in various fields.

He continued that the Syrian-Qatari relations are strengthening day by day, driven by mutual openness and the shared determination to push relations to the highest levels. He emphasized that Qatar has long demonstrated itself as a true partner to the Syrian people, standing by them in their hardships, supporting their legitimate demands, and presenting an exemplary model of noble humanitarian positions.

Dr. Turkiya further remarked that the State of Qatar has extended numerous sincere gestures to the Syrian people, the latest being its generous initiative to send two million cubic meters of gas a day to support electricity supplies, aimed at generating power across Syria to directly address the severe shortage of electricity and improve infrastructure performance.

Dr. Turkiya also praised the 27th Night of Ramadan Challenge initiative, which saw Qatari citizens donate QR 220 million for constructing and restoring residential cities in Syria, alongside numerous other humanitarian campaigns and initiatives that have made a significant impact on Syrians’ lives.

He added that the State of Qatar has been deeply involved in Syria from the very start of the revolution, playing a vital role in humanitarian and political efforts, providing invaluable support across multiple forums, and swiftly responding to crises with aid and relief efforts, including campaigns such as “Aleppo, We’re Coming” and “Sham Deserves,” while greatly contributing to the integration of Syrians in education, healthcare, and development.

The Syrian Charge d’Affaires expressed his confidence that the State of Qatar possesses the capabilities and expertise to be a key partner in building the new Syria, developing its infrastructure, and boosting its economy.

In this context, Dr. Turkiya recalled HE President Ahmed Al Sharaa’s affirmation of Qatar’s role as a strategic partner in shaping Syria’s future as a country of freedom, institutions, and the rule of law, adding that they are looking forward to establishing solid partnerships across multiple sectors, from trade to energy and industry, education and culture to innovation, and other vital fields that serve the Syrian people.
