QU’S COLLEGE OF DENTAL MEDICINE STUDENTS START CLINICAL DENTAL SERVICES

A milestone for oral health services in Qatar

The first group of dental students from Qatar University’s (QU) College of Dental Medicine (CDEM) in QU Health started their first clinical training program since they were accepted into the college four years ago. Fourteen students were very excited to begin experiential training and welcome their first patients in Hamad Dental Center, which is part of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC). The students expressed their desire to have an active role in promoting and advancing oral health as part of the overall health for residents of Qatar.

The introduction of clinical services in CDEM is aligned with the Qatar National Vision 2030 in advancing education and healthcare services to the population of Qatar. This historic milestone would not have been possible without the united efforts and many months of planning by experts in clinical dental education from CDEM and HMC, with hands-on support from top-level stakeholders at QU and the Ministry of Public Health.

CDEM students will continue to provide exceptional oral health services to patients visiting the temporary education clinics at Hamad Dental Center until they move to their permanent clinic location next to the Hazm Mebaireek General Hospital by the end of this year.

CDEM Dean, Professor Monty Duggal expressed his pride in the students and their achievements saying, “This is really a momentous occasion for the college and indeed for the country. The first batch of fourth year students have now completed their pre-clinical dental training and have started providing clinical care for patients as a part of their clinical education. In three years’ time, they will be fully qualified dentists who will not only enhance the dental workforce of Qatar but will be future leaders in the provision of oral care for the people.”

Fourth year CDEM student Ms. Aisha Ibrahim Al-Moadhadi said, “I am proud to be starting the final clinical phase in HMC. Our main vision is to provide the best care to our patients. Reaching this clinical phase tends to be a rough journey but with our high technology devices and training it was enjoyable. I aspire to serve my country and those in need by giving them the best services and to take the Qatari health care provider to another level.”

Fourth year CDEM student Mr. Abdulla Mansoor said, “I think that the experience was very pleasant, as all the supervisors and nurses are very supportive. In addition, Hamad Dental Center offers all the latest instruments for modern dentistry which will further enhance our clinical skills to become successful dentists.”

Another CDEM student Ms. Hissa Omar Al-Alansari commented, “I am honored to be among the first students at the college to begin practicing at HMC during our final clinical phase. Being able to train in a facility with such high standards of care and modern technology will help us provide our patients with high-quality care. I look forward to becoming a dentist and serving my country.”
