QU STUDENTS SUCCESSFULLY CONCLUDE THE FOURTH SUMMER RESEARCH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM 2022

Qatar University (QU) students successfully adjourn the fourth Summer Research Internship Program 2022 (SRIP 2022). The key focus of this program is the enhancement of the students’ research experiences in real-world labs and improving their scientific and analytical skills. The program is primarily organized to enhance the undergraduate students’ capacity to delve deeper into the research domain and thereby improve their outlook on scientific research and competency enrichment.

This year, the Qatar University Young Scientists Center (QUYSC) introduced three different tracks to carry out the program, one of which focuses on the ‘Outcomes Directed Intensive Research’, which drives student-learning outcomes, resulting in scholarly publications.

Following the conclusion of their program, 141 students from all three tracks received certificates for their successful project completion. Track 1 students presented 16 scientific posters. Track 2, which focuses on ‘Research & Training Focused’ also witnessed dynamic participation from 53 students, who completed their projects focusing on technical competency enhancement.

In addition, two internship projects were executed at the promises of prominent industrial leaders, ExxonMobil and Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO) exclusively for seven national students.

Vice President for Research & Graduate Studies, Prof. Mariam Al-Maadeed, officially concluded this ceremony in the presence of Qatar University faculty, and students. The event was also honored by the presence of Mr. Abdulrahman Sultan Al Darwish, Strategic Qatarization Manager at Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO).

Eight participating research centers and 4 colleges were able to produce 22 projects. The research centers include the Qatar University Young Scientists Center (QUYSC), Center for Advanced Materials (CAM), Laboratory Animal Research Center (LARC), Central Laboratories Unit (CLU), Environmental Science Center (ESC), Biomedical Research Center (BRC), Social and Economic Survey Research Institute (SESRI) and Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) while the participating colleges are College of Dental Medicine (CDM), College of Engineering (CENG), College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), and College of Education (CED).

The participating centers, colleges, and organizations were especially honored and appreciated by the Vice President for Research & Graduate Studies, Prof. Mariam Al-Maadeed, who also distributed the certificates to the faculty mentors. Prof. Mariam Al-Maadeed also highlighted the significance of their contributions towards securing the future of the nation saying, “It is highly desired to promote the multi-skilled and highly competent young generation, ensuring to make them capable of reigning in the progress of our nation, which is attained with active collaboration and participation from academicians and industries through such research internship programs.”

During the appreciation speech by Mr. Abdulrahman Sultan Al Darwish, Strategic Qatarization Manager at QAPCO, the importance of collaboration between industries and academia was soundly acknowledged.

Prof. Noora Jabor Al-Thani, Director of Qatar University Young Scientists Center (QUYSC) also conveyed her inspiration and support to the participants, wherein she emphasized, “It is a remarkable feat for Qatar University Young Scientists Center to contribute to the success of the program, duly focusing on building research-based national capacity, as it is crucially significant to the nation sustainability.”
