QU HOLDS THE FIRST WINTER RESEARCH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM 2021

The Research and Graduate Studies Sector at Qatar University (QU) organized the first Winter Research Internship Program in December 2021. The program aims to provide undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to develop their research skills.

Students were introduced to the program at the official launching event, which was attended by Dr. Nasser Abdullah AlNuaimi, Associate Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, who presented the opening speech at the event. In addition, the audience included directors of the participating research centers, faculty members, mentors and participating students.

Dr. Abdelbary Elhissi, Director of the Office of Research Planning and Development at QU also addressed the students in his welcome speech. Dr. Bassem Shomar, Manager of Research Excellence, presented to the students information about the impact of research internships on students and institutions. Dr. Mohammed Maqbool, Section Head of Research Quality, explained the internship guidelines to the students.

Ten research centers at QU participated in the event, including the Center for Advanced Materials (CAM), Environmental Science Center (ESC), Biomedical Research Center (BRC), Laboratory Animals Research Center (LARC), Central Laboratories Unit (CLU), Qatar University Young Scientists Center (QU-YSC), Social & Economic Survey Research Institute (SESRI), Ibn Khaldon Center for Humanities & Social Sciences, Qatar University Press (QU Press) and the Graduate Learning Support (GLS) section. These centers cooperated to create a list of ten training courses for the program according to their research areas.

The number of students who applied and showed interest in the program was overwhelmingly high, and it was such a successful experience due to the cooperation of the directors, mentors and staff of the respective centers. The internship program included 116 interns from different nationalities and colleges at QU.

The Research and Graduate Studies Sector establishes periodical research programs in order to foster the culture of scientific research among undergraduate and graduate-level students, and enhance their participation in research activities. The Winter Research Internship Program is considered a significant step into QU Strategy 2018-2022, and a step forward to develop and enrich the research culture within students, towards building a knowledge-based society in Qatar.
