Doha: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva met with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung during the latter's visit to Brazil. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in the economic and trade sectors.

According to Qatar News Agency, both leaders emphasized the significance of resuming the stalled trade agreement negotiations between South Korea and the Mercosur bloc, which includes Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia. The discussions also covered several regional and international issues of mutual interest. In a move to bolster cooperation, the two countries signed seven memorandums of understanding, targeting improvements in supply chains and cultural exchanges.

The formal negotiations between South Korea and Mercosur began in 2018, aiming for a comprehensive trade pact. However, these talks have been at a standstill since late 2021. President Lee's visit to Brasilia marks the first leg of his three-nation South America tour, which will also take him to Chile and Argentina, highlighting South Korea's interest in strengthening ties in the region.
