Doha: HE Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Martin Chungong affirmed that the State of Qatar leads international efforts aimed at promoting social development and human well-being, praising its tangible role in this field.
According to Qatar News Agency, Chungong stated on the sidelines of his participation in the Second World Summit for Social Development that Doha’s efficient hosting of the summit demonstrates its commitment to advancing global social development goals. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to social development, ensuring equitable equality for all.
Chungong highlighted the critical role of national parliaments in delivering social development services to all societal segments. He noted that the extensive participation in the parliamentary forum, part of the summit’s activities, underscores the forums’ importance in discussing parliaments’ legislative responsibilities in social development.
He elaborated on the clear roles parliaments must undertake, including drafting inclusive legislation and approving budgets to allocate necessary resources for implementing social justice and comprehensive social development. Additionally, parliaments must perform oversight to ensure government commitments to social development are met.
The IPU Secretary-General underscored that parliaments serve as a bridge connecting international commitments, like those at the Second World Summit for Social Development, to their practical implementation. He also mentioned the collaboration between the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Qatar’s Shura Council in organizing the parliamentary forum, aiming to enhance summit outcomes through joint reflection.
