Tunis:Qatar is enhancing its disaster preparedness capabilities domestically while extending support to vulnerable communities internationally.
According to Qatar News Agency, the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction provides a platform for nations to share strategies on mitigating disaster risks, including those linked to climate change. The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction has noted significant progress in the number of countries with early warning systems, increasing from 55 in 2015 to 128 in 2026. In this context, Qatar has emerged as a leader in disaster risk reduction with its robust national system aligned with its National Vision 2030 and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.
Qatar's efforts are not limited to domestic initiatives. The country has actively supported international communities through humanitarian and relief organizations such as the Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS). QRCS has launched various programs, including the 10th Disaster Management Camp in 2026, which trained participants in emergency preparedness and response. The society also hosts workshops to enhance disaster operations management capabilities, in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
Reflecting its commitment, Qatar is set to host the Ninth Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in 2028. This decision underscores the international community's confidence in Qatar’s capabilities in disaster risk management.
QRCS Assistant Secretary-General Mohammed Badr Al Sada emphasized that Qatar prioritizes proactive measures over reactive responses. QRCS's initiatives aim to foster a culture of prevention and preparedness, involving collaboration with government agencies and community members to strengthen national resilience against disasters.
