Doha:The Qatar Society of Engineers (QSE) has introduced the 'Qatar BIM Award,' a new initiative designed to recognize exceptional projects and practices in Building Information Modeling (BIM) within Qatar. This award aims to celebrate achievements across various sectors involved in BIM.
According to Qatar News Agency, the award includes four primary categories: individuals, government entities, contracting companies, and consulting firms. These categories enable a wide range of stakeholders in the BIM ecosystem to participate, showcasing exemplary models and experiences while promoting a culture of innovation and excellence.
The announcement of the award took place at the conclusion of the Qatar BIM 2026 Conference, organized by QSE. This conference was part of a broader professional agenda aimed at evaluating BIM's current implementation in projects and exploring significant developments, challenges, and future trends.
The QSE has stated that further details regarding the award's subcategories, evaluation criteria, nomination procedures, timeline, and judging processes will be disclosed at a later stage.
Key recommendations from the conference included the development of a unified national framework for BIM to standardize implementation mechanisms and improve project management efficiency. The integration of BIM with artificial intelligence and modern digital technologies was also emphasized, alongside expanding the use of digital twin applications for asset management and smart city development.
The conference highlighted the importance of enhancing the skills of engineering and technical personnel through continuous training and professional development. It also called for the establishment of a national platform to facilitate the exchange of information and best practices within Qatar's BIM community.
Further recommendations included creating a national guide to BIM implementation, promoting the use of ISO 19650 standards, and standardizing methodologies for classifying and coding BIM elements. A national index to measure BIM adoption and support for small and medium-sized enterprises transitioning to BIM was also proposed.
Eng. Amna Mohammed Al Naama, Chairperson of the Qatar Society of Engineers, underscored the significance of the conference in aligning with digital transformations in the engineering sector and fostering knowledge exchange among stakeholders. She noted the vital role of BIM technologies in executing complex projects, such as the National Museum of Qatar and various road projects by Ashghal.
The event was the first of its kind in Qatar, focusing on building modeling and showcasing developments and experiences in the field. Eng. Al Naama emphasized the technology's ability to facilitate construction operations, reduce execution times, and mitigate on-site risks.
Eng. Amna Al Baker, leader of the BIM team at Ashghal, highlighted significant progress in BIM implementation within Ashghal, noting its evolution into an integrated system for managing engineering information and supporting decision-making throughout project lifecycles.
The conference served as a platform for discussions on BIM frameworks, standards, integration with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and applications in various sectors. It featured five panel discussions and five specialized papers, addressing topics such as modern technologies, artificial intelligence, and the future of BIM in project management and digital transformation.
The Qatar Society of Engineers encouraged participation from project managers, consultants, contractors, and specialists in BIM and digital transformation to benefit from the shared expertise and dialogue on BIM's future applications in Qatar's engineering sector.
