Doha: Qatar is set to host the 10th edition of the 2026 FISU World University Weightlifting Championships from Sept. 8 to 12. The marquee international sporting event will further cement Doha's status as a global sports capital.

According to Qatar News Agency, the event is organized by the Qatar Collegiate Sports Federation (QCSF) under the umbrella of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The championships will see participation from federations and universities worldwide. The Doha edition is significant as the previous tournament was last held in 2018, before being paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted the global sporting calendar.

The championships will feature 116 male and female weightlifters from 21 countries, competing in eight men's and eight women's weight classes. The contests are expected to deliver intense competition. The field includes several athletes who represent their national teams at continental and world championships, highlighting the elite level of competition.

The championships will take place at the Education City Student Center Multi-Purpose Hall in Doha, ensuring top-tier organizational standards and an ideal environment for athletes and delegations. This event marks the second global event organized by the QCSF since its official launch in 2023, following the FISU University World Cup 3x3 Basketball.

In preparation for the championships, the organizing committee will hold a press conference on Sunday, Sept. 6. The conference will reveal the latest technical details and finalize arrangements, with officials from both the QCSF and FISU, along with sustainability and sponsorship partners, in attendance.

The official inauguration ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday evening, Sept. 8, marking the start of the five-day competition to crown the 2026 World University champions. The championship is expected to garner significant media attention, with the detailed schedule for the competitions and related events set to be announced progressively.
