Qatar Renews Support for Somalia

The State of Qatar has renewed its support for brotherly Somalia in various development projects in the fields of health and education, and in creating job opportunities for young people, enhancing their security capabilities, and providing political support to ensure sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of the country.

This came in the statement of the State of Qatar delivered by Deputy Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva Jawhara Al Suwaidi, at the 48th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, during an interactive dialogue with the independent expert on the situation of human rights in Somalia, under item (10) of the Council’s agenda.

Al Suwaidi said that the State of Qatar stresses that facing challenges, security threats, terrorism, the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, drought, floods and others, requires all Somali parties to exercise restraint, continue national dialogue, and commit to holding peaceful, transparent, inclusive and credible elections on time, which contributes to creating the right environment and providing means to implement plans and programs, especially those related to the promotion and protection of human rights.

In the statement, she underlined the importance of the international community continuing to provide the necessary support and technical assistance to build the capacity of institutions in line with the priorities and needs identified by the Somali government, which will contribute to the implementation of Somalia’s national and international commitments.

The State of Qatar’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva also stressed the importance of continuing to provide humanitarian and development support to the Somali people to alleviate their humanitarian suffering and enhance their capacity to rebuild the state’s infrastructure.
