New york: The State of Qatar has reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to conflict prevention and mitigation at both regional and international levels, focusing on mediation, peacebuilding, and humanitarian diplomacy to bolster international peace and security.
According to Qatar News Agency, this statement was made by Her Excellency Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, during the Security Council open debate on civilian protection in armed conflict at the UN headquarters. Her Excellency emphasized the urgent humanitarian and legal duty to protect civilians, especially women and children, amidst conflicts worldwide. She highlighted the escalation of attacks on medical personnel and facilities in violation of Security Council Resolution 2286, coinciding with its tenth anniversary.
Her Excellency noted the alarming current global situation characterized by violations of international and humanitarian laws, along with rising humanitarian and economic challenges. Specifically, she mentioned the disruption of maritime navigation through vital corridors, particularly the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, impacting civilian supply chains and escalating food insecurity.
HE Sheikha Alya reiterated Qatar's stance that Iran's actions represent a dangerous precedent and a violation of international law, threatening global security and supply chains. Qatar emphasized the necessity to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, remove naval mines, and cease illegal fees on commercial vessels to ensure navigation freedom as per international law and relevant UN resolutions.
In conclusion, Her Excellency expressed Qatar's appreciation for the mediation efforts of Pakistan and other involved parties, reaffirming support for peaceful resolution efforts to address the crisis.
