Doha:Qatar Museums, in collaboration with Years of Culture, is set to present an exhibition titled "Expanded Tradition - Contemporary Craft Practices in Mexico." This exhibition will be part of the Qatar Canada and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture and will be displayed from October 27 to December 26, 2026, at M7, Qatar's hub for fashion and design innovation.
According to Qatar News Agency, the exhibition will highlight artisans who maintain traditional crafting techniques while innovating from within. Curated by Ana Elena Mallet, a distinguished professor at the Tecnológico de Monterrey, the exhibition examines how new generations reinterpret inherited techniques in response to contemporary issues. The design and museography have been developed by LANZA Atelier, an architecture studio based in Mexico City.
The exhibition is structured around five thematic sections, each exploring different aspects of craft practices. "Inheriting the Gesture" focuses on the transmission of techniques and movements through families and communities, while "Material Fictions" showcases artisans creating visual narratives beyond utilitarian objects. "Imagined Territories" delves into the symbolic use of landscapes and collective memory, and "Wearing Identity" explores how fashion practices reinterpret traditional garments. Finally, "Inhabiting Ancestral Futures" looks at how tradition can shape future possibilities through innovation.
Featured artisans from across Mexico work in various disciplines, including dress-making, textiles, jewelry, furniture design, and pottery. The exhibition will feature over 100 objects, emphasizing tradition as a living, evolving practice.
