Qatar Engages in International Conference on Ukrainian Children and Civilians

Toronto:The State of Qatar took part in the Second International Conference on Returning Ukrainian Children, Detained Civilians, and Prisoners of War, held in Toronto, Canada, from September 28-29. Representing Qatar at the event was HE Minister of State for International Cooperation, Dr. Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad.

According to Qatar News Agency, Dr. Al Misnad emphasized Qatar's commitment to supporting international efforts to peacefully resolve the Russia-Ukraine crisis through dialogue and diplomacy. She highlighted the international community's collective responsibility to protect civilians, especially children, and stressed that their safety and future should remain central to global initiatives.

Qatar has been actively involved in humanitarian efforts since 2023, facilitating the return of children separated by the conflict in collaboration with Ukrainian and Russian authorities. These efforts have included over 14 humanitarian operations with the International Committee of the Red Cross, reuniting 87 Ukrainian children with their families. Qatar has also hosted families post-reunification, offering recovery and rehabilitation programs to support their well-being.

In 2023, Qatar allocated $100 million to humanitarian response efforts in Ukraine, addressing sectors like health, education, and basic services. Additionally, Qatar contributed $20 million to the Ukrainian grain export initiative and supported child protection and education projects, including a $3.5 million initiative for safe shelters and educational facilities.

Qatar's support extended to providing 50 university scholarships for Ukrainian students and aiding the rehabilitation of health facilities in Ukraine. This included childcare facilities in partnership with the Olena Zelenska Foundation. Qatar also allocated $5 million to support Ukrainian refugees and displaced persons.

Dr. Al Misnad reiterated that humanitarian and development aid are key aspects of Qatar's foreign policy, complementing its diplomatic efforts to resolve conflicts and promote dialogue. She praised Canada's commitment to peace and child protection, aligning with Qatar€š¬€ž¢s vision for a peaceful and just resolution to conflicts.
