Qatar Calls on UN Members to Pay Contributions Regularly

New York, October 05 (QNA) – Qatar on Friday stressed the need for the commitment of all UN member states in paying their assessed contributions fully, unconditionally and on time, in accordance with Article 17 of the UN Charter.
The remarks were made by Ali Mohammed Ali Al Motawaa, first secretary of the Foreign Ministry’s Department of Administrative and Financial Affairs, as he addressed the 5th committee of the 67th UN General Assembly about Item 134: “Scale of assessments for the apportionment of the expenses of the United Nations.”
Al Motawaa, at the same time, demanded to be taken into consideration the economic difficulties facing developing countries that prevent them from temporarily fulfilling their financial obligations.
“Qatar faces the challenges and effects of the global financial and economic crisis like the rest of the world countries, but, at the same time, we pledge to fulfill our legal commitment to pay our contributions in full,” said the Qatari official.
Al Motawaa expressed Qatar’s appreciation of the efforts made by member states that implemented multi-year payment plans and fulfilled their obligations. He demanded that these plans remain voluntary, not to be used to exercise any pressure on member states, and not be included as a factor when considering an exemption under Article 19 of the Charter.
